Patience in Islam

Patience is a human quality and trait that is highly encouraged in Islam. It is the ability to endure difficulties and be calm in the face of adversity. It is also considered a virtue which will reap great rewards, as Allah s.w.t. says in the Quran:

Say “O My servants who believe! Be mindful of your Lord. Those who do good in this world will have a good reward. And Allah’s earth is spacious. Only those who endure patiently will be given their reward without limit.”

(Surah Az-Zumar, 39:10)

Allah s.w.t. mentions the word ‘Sabr’ in its different forms in the Quran. Apart from patience, it can also be defined as endurance, fortitude, steadfastness, restraint and perseverance. Patience (Sabr) is very important in ones life. One Has to bear all the calamities, difficulties and problems he face in day to day life. There is a big reward for being patient.Allah s.w.t grants a big reward for patience as the above mentioned verse says.

The Quranic verse in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153) teaches the importance of patience:

  • يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ

“O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.”

Real Patience is at the first stroke of calamity or grief, as mentioned in a hadith. The Prophet s.a.w. said:

إِنَّمَا الصَّبْرُ عِنْدَ الصَّدْمَةِ الْأُولَ

“Verily, patience is at the first stroke of a calamity.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

Whatever happens in our day to day life, we have to be patience if some harm comes we have to bear thinking that it's a exam from Allah s.w.t, if we bear it patience then e will get reward. And if something good happens in our life we have tobe thankful to God i.e. Allah then we will get the reward for that. Read the following saying hadith:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Wondrous is the affair of the believer, as there is good for him in every matter and this is not the case with anyone but the believer. If he is happy, he thanks Allah and thus there is good for him. If he is harmed, he shows patience and thus there is good for him.

For every problem, every deficit or damage Allah forgives sins of a muslim.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Nothing afflicts a Muslim of hardship, nor illness, nor anxiety, nor sorrow, nor harm, nor distress, nor even the pricking of a thorn, but that Allah will expiate his sins by it.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Allah Almighty says: O son of Adam, if you are patient and restrained at the first moment of calamity, I would not be pleased with any reward for you less than Paradise.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Verily, the blessed one is kept away from trials, the blessed one is kept away from trials, the blessed one is kept away from trials. How good is one who is afflicted but bears it patiently!

And the Prophet ﷺ said:

There will be trials during which one sitting will be better than the one standing, and one standing will be better than one walking, and one walking will be better than one running. Whoever exposes himself to these trials will be destroyed, so whoever finds a place of protection or refuge should take shelter in it.

And We will surely test you with some fear and hunger, and with dearth of wealth, lives and crops; and give glad tidings to those who patiently endure (Chapter 2: Verse 155)

So Allah ajja wa jal tests everyone with fear, hunger loss of wealth.crops etc and gives glad tidings fo those who bear it with patience. And there is big reward for this and that is heaven. So Allah jalla shanahu will save people with patience from hell, jhannum. So may Allah us you, me and everyone from specially hell fire and all other torments He has made.So Allah s.w.t grants us heaven fo right deeds and punishes for bad kind of deeds.

There is famous saying that say that "Allah loves a person more than 70 mothers". There is hikmah, wisdom , in every pain and difficulties which we encounter , Allah tests u with that, will we bear it patience or not. With these difficulties Allah s.w.t wants to make near to him, and also so we can recognize Him that He is there.Who is our lord and sustainer.

Surah Hijr : Verse 49 nd 50 says:

Sahih International
[O Muhammad], inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful.

and that My torment is indeed the most painful".

So where Allah is the most merciful , He also gives punishment so we have to obey Him , love Him and respect and also fear from Him.Allah s.w.t (i.e. God)loves His slaves. So always be patient and also take care for His slave and His creation, people, Man,women, children and old people.Don't harm anyone.

If someone commits a sin, regarding the rights of Allah, it can be easily undone with the help of repentance whenever someone realizes his mistake. But حقوق العباد such that a mistake in this regard is not forgiven by Allah even if you repent and ask for forgiveness. The only way to attain forgiveness is to fulfill the rights of these concerned or through earning the forgiveness of that affected person. That is why we must be very careful in matters of(rights of people/slaves) حقوق العباد.

That is why Muhammad (slw) said,
All the creatures are family of Allah which means all those Allah's creatures and He is the owner of them. Then Rasulullah (slw) said, So Allah (swt) loves most those who are kind to His creatures, those who treat His creatures well.

Allah is the Most Merciful , Most Compassionate, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy. His Mercy encompasses all things. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“… and My Mercy embraces all things.” [Al-A`araf 7:156]

In Sahih Muslim, Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah has one hundred parts of mercy, of which He sent down one between the jinn, mankind, the animals and the insects, by means of which they are compassionate and merciful to one another, and by means of which wild animals are kind to their offspring. And Allah has kept back ninety-nine parts of mercy with which to be merciful to His slaves of the Day of Resurrection/judgment day.” (Muslim, al-Tawbah, 6908)

‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Some prisoners were brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and there was a woman among the prisoners who was searching (for her child). When she found her child she embraced him and put him to her breast. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to us, ‘Do you think that this woman would throw her child in the fire?’ We said, ‘No, by Allah, not if she is able not to.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘Allah is more merciful to His slaves than this woman is to her child.’”  (Agreed upon)

“… and My Mercy embraces all things.” [Al-A`araf 7:156]

Aspects of the mercy of Allah towards His slaves

One aspect of the Mercy of Allah to His slaves is that He sent the messengers and revealed the Books and laws to organize their lives according to the ways of wisdom, far removed from hardship and difficulty. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And We have sent you (O Muhammad) not but as a mercy for the ‘alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists).” [Al-Anbiya 21:107]

The Mercy of Allah is what will admit His believing slaves to Paradise on the Day of Resurrection. No one will ever enter Paradise because of his deeds alone, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “No one’s deeds will ever admit him to Paradise.” They said, “Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “No, not even me, unless Allah showers me with His Mercy. So try to be near to perfection. And no one should wish for death; he is either doing good so he will do more of that, or he is doing wrong so he may repent.” [Al-Bukhari, Muslim]

So the believer must remain in a state between hoping for the Mercy of Allah and fearing His punishment, for Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Declare (O Muhammad) unto My slaves, that truly, I am the Oft-Forgiving, the Most-Merciful. And that My Torment is indeed the most painful torment.” [Al-Hijr 15:49-50]

With regard to your saying that Allah loves us more than seventy mothers, Allah knows best concerning that. It is sufficient for us to know that the Mercy of Allah encompasses all things. O Allah, have mercy upon us, O Most Merciful of those who show mercy.

Surah Az-Zumar Ayat 53 (39:53 Quran) With Tafsir:

۞قُلۡ يَٰعِبَادِيَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسۡرَفُواْ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمۡ لَا تَقۡنَطُواْ مِن رَّحۡمَةِ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَغۡفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًاۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Qul yaa’ibaadiyal lazeena asrafoo ‘alaaa anfusihim laa taqnatoo mirrahmatil laah; innal laaha yaghfiruz zunooba jamee’aa; innahoo Huwal Ghafoorur Raheem

Sahih International
Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”

And Allah knows best.
